Twenty residents of Avannaata Municipality are currently preparing for careers in the tourism industry. In Ilulissat, they are participating in a 12-week course through May 30, designed to equip them with the skills needed to work in passenger shipping and tourism along the coast of Greenland.
The course is organized in collaboration between Majoriaq and Avannaata Kommunia, with the maritime school providing the instruction. Here, participants learn about topics such as engine mechanics, navigation, rules of the road at sea, and the handling of hazardous materials.
The program is being conducted as an AMA course and also serves as a pilot project supported by the municipality. The goal is to strengthen maritime skills in North Greenland and create more opportunities for local residents in the tourism industry.
Mayor Welcomes High Turnout
Mayor Lars Erik Gabrielsen visited the course participants during the program and was pleased that people from both towns and villages had traveled to Ilulissat to take part.
“We are very pleased that there are participants coming from other cities and towns. We want more people to have the same opportunities for education and development. I am delighted to see so many dedicated participants,” says the mayor.
He also emphasized the importance of cooperation in creating new opportunities in the region.
“We need you, and I wish you all the best,” says Lars Erik Gabrielsen.
Ready for the summer season
The course is designed so that, upon completion, participants can join the workforce during the busy summer season, when the need for skilled workers in the tourism and boating industries is greatest.
According to the mayor, it is important to train more local residents for the tourism industry.
“It is important that we help train more people in the tourism sector and that more residents of North Greenland have the opportunity to complete a course that can help strengthen the local economy,” he says.
