On June 25, 2026, Naalakkersuisut decided that a Development Plan for the fishing industry in Qaanaaq should be drawn up. Accordingly, it has been decided to establish a working group comprising all relevant stakeholders, who will help draft a long-term development plan similar to the development plan for East Greenland. The working group can help develop the fishing industry in Qaanaaq and the surrounding settlements.
The Naalakkersuisoq for Fisheries, Hunting, Agriculture, and Self-Sufficiency was in Qaanaaq from May 16 to 19, where he engaged in constructive dialogue with local residents. During his visit, residents expressed a desire for a plan for the long-term development of the fishing industry in the area. It is against this backdrop that Naalakkersuisut is now initiating this work.
The Department of Fisheries, Hunting, Agriculture, and Self-Sufficiency will now begin the work and convene the members of the working group after the summer break.
