Avannaata Kommunia is seeking a qualified translator/interpreter to start on August 1, 2026, or as soon as possible. The position is based in Ilulissat and reports to the secretariat.

You’ll be part of an interpreting department with three positions, where we work closely together, bounce ideas off each other, and help one another on a daily basis. The atmosphere is informal and positive, even when things get busy.
You’ll have a varied workday with a range of tasks, where your main responsibility is to help citizens, employees, and government agencies understand one another. Your efforts make a difference and are appreciated. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the interpreting field.
The work takes place both at the administrative office and out in the municipality’s other departments. Some days are busy, and there are occasionally tasks to be done in the evenings and on weekends. The workweek is 40 hours. You should expect business travel as required by the position.
Your Responsibilities
- Translation of ad hoc tasks via the municipality's systems
- Interpretation services for Sullissivik, MISI, the Family Center, Majoriaq, and others
- Simultaneous Interpretation at Committee Meetings and City Council Meetings (KommuneTV)
- Quality Assurance for Translations
- Working Independently to Complete Tasks in a Busy Workday
We expect you to
- Is a trained translator/interpreter
- Has strong collaboration skills and thrives on working across teams
- Works in a structured manner and with a focus on quality
- Can handle multiple tasks at the same time
- Preferably has experience working in a politically governed organization
About the Municipality
Avannaata Municipality has 10,800 residents spread across the towns of Ilulissat, Uummannaq, Upernavik, and Qaanaaq, as well as 21 settlements. Ilulissat is a growing, bustling town that will have a new Atlantic Airport in 2026. In the summer, many tourists visit the town, and there are excellent opportunities for a vibrant community life and outdoor activities.
Salary and Terms of Employment:
Salary and employment conditions are governed by the applicable collective bargaining agreement between the Government of Greenland and the relevant bargaining organization.
The position will include a 3-month probationary period.

: Staff housing may be provided for this position.
