Greenland, Denmark, and the United States expect to sign an agreement next week that will strengthen security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic region.
The three governments are expected to sign the agreement next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Once signed, the agreement will need to go through the necessary parliamentary procedures to enter into force.
Naalakkersuisut Chairman Jens-Frederik Nielsen states: “It
is gratifying that we are about to enter into an agreement that ensures and strengthens security for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States, and the Western alliance. The agreement recognizes Greenland’s interests and our place in international cooperation. This benefits us all.”
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated: “I
am pleased that there is a prospect of a good agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the United States. An agreement that strengthens our shared security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic region and is therefore also good for NATO and Europe. And an agreement that simultaneously recognizes the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.”
