“On Monday, September 14, Greenland’s new national park in West Greenland will be inaugurated.
Naalakkersuisut, the Municipality of Qeqertalik, and Qeqqata Kommunia will celebrate the official opening with an event at the Reindeer Glacier near Kangerlussuaq
.”I am looking forward to the opening of the new national park. We have some of the world’s most unique natural areas, and we have a responsibility to care for nature. We are taking an important step to protect the area’s nature and wildlife, while still allowing the public to use the area. “This is not just about us today, but just as much about future generations,” says Naalakkersuisoq for the Environment, Nature, Energy, and Research, Jørgen Rosbach.
The name of the national park will be announced today. The park will be the first national park created by Greenland itself and rooted in a collaboration between the Municipality of Qeqertalik, Qeqqata Kommunia, and Naalakkersuisut.
Everyone can continue to visit the area, hunt, or fish as before. Only in a few small, designated areas are there specific restrictions during certain periods to protect vulnerable wildlife.
West Greenland National Park, in
brief Area: 22,249.80 km².
Location: West Greenland, between Kangerlussuaq and the Disko Bay.
Effective date: June 1, 2026.
Official inauguration: September 14, 2026.
Historical significance: Greenland’s first national park in more than 50 years, and the first developed by the country itself.
Initiators: Qeqertalik Municipality, Qeqqata Kommunia, and the Wild Nature Foundation.
Funding: EU Green Growth.
Three main objectives: Nature conservation, continued local use, and sustainable tourism.
