Naalakkersuisoq for the Environment, Nature, Energy, and Research, Jørgen “Juulut” Rosbach, had a productive meeting with the new Minister of Climate, Energy, and Utilities, Samira Nawa.
It was the first time the two ministers had met, so it was an “introductory meeting” intended to allow them to get to know each other better. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the already close dialogue and cooperation in the area of energy supply, as well as the upcoming international climate negotiations at COP 31. As a new development, the two ministers discussed increased cooperation in the area of waste management.
“It was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to meet Samira Nawa. Our political responsibilities overlap in several areas, and I’m pleased that we share a number of common interests and ambitions that we can continue to work on in the future,” says Juulut.
Focus on Waste Management and Closer Cooperation
A key topic at the meeting was waste management, an area in which Greenland has been working purposefully for many years to improve its efforts.
“We currently have two modern waste-to-energy plants where flue gas is treated in a manner that is safe for the environment and public health. However, in many parts of Greenland, we continue to face major challenges in ensuring safe transportation and waste management—especially in the outlying districts,” explains Juulut.
The two ministers agree on the need to strengthen cooperation in the area of waste management. A joint working group between Greenland and Denmark will therefore be established. The working group will examine the specific challenges in the waste sector, share experiences, and identify potential relevant funding opportunities.
