In Kullorsuaq, residents have long wanted to improve their homes, which have been worn down by wind and weather. Especially in homes where children live, there is a need for repairs, new roofing felt, and plenty of paint. This is according to Avannaata Kommunia’s website.
Over the past few days, eight international volunteers have been working side by side with the local community to improve conditions for the families. They’ve been working with paintbrushes and roofing felt from morning to night—but look how great it’s turning out.
Work began earlier this week, and every day more and more volunteers from the village have been coming to help.
Communication with the international volunteers takes place in English, using hand gestures, foot movements, and facial expressions—and both children and teenagers help with translation when needed.
So far, 12 houses have been painted and roofing felt has been installed on 3 houses, says recreation director Brigitte Kammann Danielsen from Kullorsuaq:
“Unfortunately, the international volunteers will soon have to leave, but we will continue our great collaboration and sense of community so that we can use up all the materials that have been purchased,” says recreation director Brigitta Kammann Danielsen, Avannaata Kommunia, which organized the renovation together with the Greenlandic Children’s Association.
In July 2026, Mayor Lars Erik Gabrielsen signed a cooperation agreement between the Greenlandic Children’s Association and Avannaata Municipality so that this and other activities in Kullorsuaq, in particular, can help improve children’s lives.
