In connection with the Self-Government’s new regulations on the hunting and protection of reindeer and musk oxen in 2025, a requirement for catch reporting was introduced. Therefore, 2026 licenses can only be issued to applicants who have submitted a hunting report for the preceding calendar year. In addition, new applicants who meet the requirements for being granted a license are eligible.
In this connection, the Department of Fisheries, Hunting, Agriculture, and Self-Sufficiency has investigated how many catch reports from the summer and fall of 2025 have been received. License holders have had the option to submit catch reports by returning their licenses to the municipality or by submitting catch reports via www.sullissivik.gl.
It turns out that a total of 5,798 reindeer hunting licenses were issued throughout Greenland in 2025, and that only 2,543 of these have been returned with a catch report. This corresponds to only 44% of the licenses issued. Thus, 3,255 reindeer hunting licenses from 2025 have yet to be returned.
The corresponding figures for musk ox licenses show that 1,362 licenses were issued throughout Greenland in 2025, and that only 762 of these have been returned with a catch report. This corresponds to only 56% of the licenses issued. Thus, there are 600 musk ox licenses from 2025 that have not yet been returned.
The Ministry has issued this year’s quotas and hunting seasons for reindeer and musk oxen for public comment, with a deadline of June 24, 2026. There are no significant changes compared to 2025. Until July 31, 2026, it will be possible to report catches of reindeer and musk oxen for 2025; this can be done by returning the license to the municipality or by submitting a catch report via www.sullissivik.gl.
