A long-standing chess festival has returned to East Greenland, where children and young people in Kulusuk enjoyed a week of tournaments, lectures, and international friendships.
The long-standing Polar Pelagic Chess Festival has just been held in East Greenland.
For many years, the festival has served as a gathering place for children and young people in the area, where chess is not just about the game on the board, but also about community, learning, and cultural exchange.
The tradition dates back to 2003, when the Hrókurinn Chess Club organized chess days in Tasiilaq, Kulusuk, and several other villages with support from Polar Pelagic.
A week of chess and fellowship
This year, the festival was once again held in East Greenland in collaboration with Kalak, the Greenland-Iceland Friendship Association.
Due to the weather and technical challenges, plans had to be adjusted along the way. Nevertheless, it turned out to be an eventful week in Kulusuk, featuring chess tournaments, simultaneous exhibitions, lectures, and gifts for the local community.
