In the proposed budget for 2027 and subsequent years, Naalakkersuisut has allocated funds for the establishment of an educational center in Tasiilaq.
The city’s residents have been calling for such an initiative for many years, and the Naalakkersuisoq for Education, Culture, Sports, and the Church, Nivi Olsen, is pleased that there is now a prospect that the educational center can become a reality.
“One of our priorities has been to ensure better educational opportunities on the east coast, so that students don’t necessarily have to leave their homes and families. That is why we are very pleased that funding has now been proposed for an education center that can serve as a hub for both existing and new educational programs,” says Nivi Olsen.
Strong Interest in Education on the East Coast
There is a great deal of interest in education on the east coast. This became clear when a decentralized group of 19 counseling assistants completed their training in Tasiilaq in the spring of 2026.
The team was established through a collaboration between the Social Pedagogy Seminar in Ilulissat and Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq.
The Naalakkersuisoq is pleased that the establishment of an education center will open up far more opportunities for decentralized educational programs, as well as courses designed to improve skills and provide professional qualifications.
“In the coming period, we will work with the municipality to identify which educational programs, as well as upskilling and skills-building courses, are needed. At the same time, we need to ensure the actual establishment of the education center. This is an important task that we’re very much looking forward to,” says Nivi Olsen, continuing:
“Based on Naalakkersuisut’s new action plan for distance learning and the positive experiences with hybrid learning, far more educational opportunities are opening up on the east coast than before—both in vocational education and in higher education.”
