The municipality has allocated funds through 2026 for the cleanup of the seabed in the halibut fishing grounds, and the municipality’s application to the Naalakkersuisut Environmental Fund for a grant for the project has been approved. The cleanup is expected to be carried out in collaboration with KNAPP and based on the fishermen’s knowledge. Likewise, stakeholders associated with the fishing industry, such as fish landing sites, are welcome to participate.

KNAPP in Ilulissat, Uummannaq, Upernavik, and Qaanaaq will be contacted before summer progresses too far regarding opportunities for collaboration and a proposal to hold a meeting. For example, a joint large-scale cleanup during the year could be carried out in a specific month over five consecutive days in collaboration with the waste management staff in the settlements, but in the individual districts, the fishermen’s knowledge must be utilized.
