Help build strong schools and provide comprehensive support for children and youth in Avannaata Municipality

Would you like to lead the school division and MISI-Avannaa, with responsibility for stable operations, academic quality, and development? Avannaata Kommunia is seeking a department head who can set the direction, bring the department together, and ensure that strategies and decisions are translated into tangible results for children, youth, and schools.

A key leadership role with real influence

As Head of the School Division and MISI-Avannaa, you will serve as a key strategic and professional leader within the Department of Culture, Schools, and Day Care. The position is based in Ilulissat. You will report directly to the director of the department and work closely with school administrators, staff, and consultants, as well as the municipality’s political and administrative leadership.

This area is the focus of significant political attention. The school strategy sets the direction for continued development, and political objectives must be translated into concrete actions. This requires a department head who can bridge the gap between policy, administration, and practice and see decisions through to completion.

This position requires you to ensure stable day-to-day operations while also leading long-term development. You must be able to set priorities, build consensus, and maintain a shared direction across the municipality’s cities and towns.

About the School District and MISI-Avannaa

Avannaata Municipality covers a large geographical area, and schools operate under varying local conditions. MISI-Avannaa serves as the municipality’s VSP/PPR unit and provides educational-psychological counseling, guidance, and interdisciplinary support for children and youth. The department head must view the area as a whole while also understanding local needs.

You will serve as the immediate supervisor for the school district’s consultants and the staff at MISI-Avannaa. You will be responsible for strengthening school administrations’ pedagogical, personnel, and administrative leadership and ensuring close collaboration between schools, MISI-Avannaa, daycare centers, and other relevant disciplines.

Your Main Responsibilities

• Set a clear professional and strategic direction for the school division and MISI-Avannaa in close collaboration with the director, school principals, and the division’s staff.

• Ensure stable and efficient operations, including monitoring finances, staffing, instruction, student affairs, case management, and administrative tasks.

• Lead the work on the school strategy and ensure that policy objectives and decisions are translated into realistic actions, clearly defined responsibilities, and ongoing follow-up.

• Support school administrators and ensure clear professional leadership and prioritization of tasks within MISI-Avannaa.

• Strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration between schools, MISI-Avannaa, daycare centers, and other relevant partners, with a focus on early and coordinated support.

• Provide policy support, including case presentations, decision-making documents, status updates, and expert assessments.

• Ensure professional and pedagogical oversight and work systematically with quality, data, documentation, and evaluation in both areas of responsibility.

• Ensure the implementation of and compliance with applicable laws, agreements, and guidelines.

• Contribute to the recruitment, retention, and professional development of managers and employees.

Your Professional Profile

We imagine that you:

• has a relevant educational background, such as a teaching degree, preferably supplemented by leadership training or other relevant continuing education

• Has proven leadership experience and a solid understanding of the elementary school system; experience with VSP/PPR, special education, or interdisciplinary counseling is a plus

• has experience working in a politically governed organization or an understanding of the interplay between politics and administration

• Can translate strategy and decisions into action and demonstrable results

• Has experience with financial management, planning, prioritization, and follow-up

• communicates complex professional issues clearly and effectively—both orally and in writing

Your Personal Skills

You are a leader who:

• provides direction, clarity, and peace of mind—even when there are many tasks to handle at once

• is clear, inspires trust, and is good at rallying others

• can set priorities and make decisions while keeping an eye on both the big picture and day-to-day operations

• works in a structured manner and follows through on agreements and initiatives

• treats managers, employees, politicians, and partners with respect and professional confidence
