The municipal council of Kujalleq Municipality has designated new locations for two of Nanortalik’s utility facilities. The power plant must be moved away from the water’s edge because the water level is rising.
“As the water level in Greenland has been rising in recent years, there has long been a desire to ensure the power plant’s continued operation by relocating it farther away from the water’s edge,” the municipal administration writes in its case summary.
On Wednesday, the municipal council approved the location of the new power plant in an area that has already been zoned for commercial use. An engineering firm has already drawn up the plans.
The second project is likely to be located in the northern part of an area near Isua Aqqutaa, where there are currently buildings that are no longer in use. The area is zoned for residential use, so the municipal plan must be amended before construction can begin.
The municipality’s decision concerns where the facilities may be located. Before construction can begin, a local plan must be drawn up for each of them, and the power plant project must undergo an eight-week public comment period.
