The Chair of the Naalakkersuisut, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and U.S. President Donald Trump signed an agreement today that strengthens security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic region.
The Chairman of Naalakkersuisut, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, states: “The
agreement recognizes that we are a people with the right to self-determination. At the same time, we are recognized as part of our shared security in the Arctic.”
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated: “Today
we have signed a good agreement—for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the United States, as well as for NATO and Europe. The agreement strengthens our common defense and security and is deeply rooted in NATO cooperation. The agreement recognizes and respects the Kingdom’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.”
The signing ceremony took place at the United Nations building in New York. The United States, Denmark, and Greenland will each keep one signed copy of the agreement in English, Danish, and Greenlandic, respectively. The agreement must now go through the necessary parliamentary procedures to enter into force.
