On Saturday evening and into the night, Malene Vahl Rasmussen, mayor of the Municipality of Kujalleq, accompanied the police in Qaqortoq on patrol to observe their work up close and gain insight into the situations the officers encounter in the town.
On a daily basis, the mayor reads police reports and is briefed on incidents that occur in the municipality. But on Saturday night, the reports were replaced by a ride in a police car.
The purpose was to gain a better understanding of the day-to-day work of the police and of the challenges underlying the incidents subsequently described in the police reports.
-It’s important to me not just to read about what’s happening. I also want to see and experience the reality that police officers face. When you’re out on patrol yourself, you gain a completely different understanding of both their work and the people and situations they encounter,” says Mayor Malene Vahl Rasmussen.
During the patrol, the mayor observed the police at work and gained a concrete insight into the tasks that officers handle during a typical shift.
At the same time, it provides an important picture of the challenges that exist—and where there may be a need for the municipality and other authorities to work even more closely together to find solutions.
Grateful for the police’s efforts
The mayor also highlights the close cooperation between the municipality and the police in the region.
-We have a very close and important partnership with the police, and I am truly grateful for the work they do every single day. They show up when they’re needed, and they often find themselves in very demanding situations. That deserves a great deal of respect,” says Malene Vahl Rasmussen.
According to the mayor, it is important for the municipality to maintain close communication with the police, because the police’s day-to-day work also provides valuable insight into where the municipality can take action.
-What the police encounter while on patrol also tells us something about what we need to continue working on. If we want to create a safer environment and better conditions for our citizens, we need to understand the real-world problems. That’s why this kind of patrol is important to me,” says Malene Vahl Rasmussen.
The patrol is therefore not just a visit to the police, but also part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to understand local challenges and strengthen cross-sectoral collaboration.
The mayor emphasizes that a safe community requires the municipality, the police, and other local stakeholders to work closely together—and to be willing to confront reality where it unfolds.
