Drivers who park on bike paths, sidewalks, and accessible parking spaces in Nuuk may face a parking fine in the future. Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq is considering establishing municipal parking enforcement in the city. This is evident from the agenda for the meeting of the Committee on Economy and Business on August 20, 2026, where the matter is scheduled for discussion.
The reason for this is a growing number of vehicles and ongoing complaints from residents about illegal parking, which, among other things, hinders snow removal and emergency response vehicles’ ability to get through. Although there are clear signs in several locations, the municipality currently has no way to enforce the rules—but an executive order on municipal parking enforcement in Greenland allows municipalities to issue parking tickets.
The Department of Public Works and Environment therefore proposes to explore the possibilities for parking enforcement, initially limited to Nuuk. Enforcement will be introduced in phases, with the most obvious violations—parking on bike paths, sidewalks, and in no-parking zones—being addressed first. Later, time-limited parking zones may be considered.
This work is being carried out in consultation with the Greenland Police, the Emergency Management Agency, and the Traffic Council, all of which support the initiative, and residents must be clearly informed before any such arrangement takes effect. Following the committee’s discussion, the matter will be forwarded to the Municipal Council.
