Elderly residents of nursing homes and day centers in Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq can look forward to bike rides in the fresh air if the municipality enters into a three-year partnership with the Cykel’liussisartut association regarding the “Cycling Without Age” initiative. This is stated in the agenda for the meeting of the Committee on Finance and Business on August 20, 2026, where the matter is up for approval.
The purpose of the partnership is to improve the quality of life for older adults through bike rides, social activities, and increased volunteer work. The initiative is aimed specifically at older adults in nursing homes and those experiencing social isolation.
The agreement runs from August 1, 2026, to July 31, 2029. During this period, among other things, a local center will be established in Nuuk to foster a sense of community and organize activities for the municipality’s senior citizens.
Four rickshaw bicycles throughout the municipality
As part of the partnership, the association is providing two rickshaw bicycles, project management, and volunteer coordination. The municipality provides a contact person, staff resources for coordination and activities, and two additional rickshaw bikes, so that the program can be used across the municipality’s nursing homes and day centers.
The Department of Welfare and Labor Market Affairs believes that the partnership will help prevent loneliness among older adults, strengthen collaboration with civil society, and create more meaningful activities for the municipality’s older residents.
Grant of 43,000 kroner
In 2026, the Municipality of Sermersooq will provide a grant of 43,000 kroner to Cykel’liussisartut as the municipality’s contribution to the partnership. The funds will come from the social fund, which was previously allocated to the association. The administration assesses that the municipality’s responsibilities within the partnership can be carried out within the existing organizational structure.
The partnership is in line with the municipality’s 2016–2026 policy on older adults, “A Dignified and Active Life,” and the Committee on Older Adults and Care’s policy objectives for 2025–2029.
The matter has been submitted by the Committee on Senior Citizens and Care and, following consideration by the Committee on Finance and Business, will be forwarded to the Municipal Council for final approval.
