Naalakkersuisut has received complaints that cruise ship traffic in certain fjord areas is perceived as a burden on the local population and the affected natural areas. These inquiries concern, among other things, the impact on wildlife, noise pollution, and the desire to preserve the areas’ natural and recreational values.
The Naalakkersuisut views the growing interest in Greenland as a travel destination positively and recognizes that cruise tourism contributes significantly to the development of the tourism industry. Tourism generates economic activity and revenue in local communities and supports employment and business development in towns and settlements.
At the same time, Naalakkersuisut emphasizes that tourism development must take place on a sustainable basis and with respect for the local population, nature, and wildlife. Responsible tourism development requires maintaining an appropriate balance between commercial interests and the protection of Greenland’s natural and cultural heritage.
In light of this, Naalakkersuisut recommends that cruise ship traffic in fjord areas be avoided or restricted as much as possible. The purpose of this recommendation is to limit the impact on vulnerable natural areas and wildlife, as well as to accommodate the local population’s desire to preserve the areas’ recreational value and opportunities for hunting and fishing.
Naalakkersuisut urges cruise lines, captains, and other stakeholders in the cruise industry to comply with the recommendation and continue to contribute to the responsible and sustainable development of cruise tourism in Greenland through sound planning, dialogue, and consideration of local conditions.
It should also be noted that the Naalakkersuisut and the municipalities are currently drafting restrictions on zoning in accordance with the Tourism Act. The zoning will clarify which areas are open to cruise tourism and which areas will be subject to restrictions. The restrictions are being developed in collaboration with the local population, the business community, and other stakeholders, and will take effect following a public hearing.
