The residents of Nanortalik and the settlements of Narsarmijit, Aappilattoq, Tasiusaq, Ammassivik, and Alluitsup Paa will vote in an advisory referendum to decide whether they wish to secede from the Municipality of Kujalleq and become an independent municipality.
The result of the referendum will serve as a basis for the Inatsisartut’s further consideration of the matter. It is the Inatsisartut that will make the final decision on whether Nanortalik and the surrounding villages should remain part of the Municipality of Kujalleq or become an independent municipality.
Ahead of the referendum, the chairs of the municipal council’s committees and the members of the Finance and Business Committee will hold public meetings in Nanortalik and the surrounding villages.
– The results of the referendum on September 11 will be forwarded to political decision-makers. The Municipality of Kujalleq cannot make a decision on how to proceed based on the results, as the matter must be considered and decided by the Inatsisartut. Therefore, I hope that many residents will attend the public meetings leading up to the advisory referendum. The meetings will be a good opportunity to get information and ask questions, says Mayor Malene Vahl Rasmussen.
Public meetings will be held on August 11 in Narsarmijit and Aappilattoq, on August 12 in Nanortalik and Tasiusaq, and on August 13 in Ammassivik and Alluitsup Paa. Times and locations will be announced at a later date.
