The IKUMA Music Festival receives financial and practical support from Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, which aims to help foster a strong and vibrant cultural life in East Greenland. The music festival will take place on Friday in Tasiilaq and will bring people together through music, creativity, and community. Rasmus Lyberth is among the performers.
Funding for a festival with roots in Tasiilaq
Behind the festival are four friends from Tasiilaq: Carl Florian Sørensen, Mathias Stenbakken, Pappi Zaki Henriksen, and Paakkannaq Henriksen. The project began as a music workshop and a concert but has grown into a full-fledged festival.
The festival is receiving 50,000 kroner from the Sermeq fund. In addition, the Culture Department in Tasiilaq has granted 15,000 kroner to help launch the festival.
The Sermeq Fund is Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq’s development fund, which supports initiatives that foster activity, community, and development in the municipality. The fund is open to applications from those who create innovative cultural activities and promote collaboration between various cultural actors, the private sector, and the municipality’s residents.
A helping hand for a great initiative
In addition to financial support, the municipality provides a number of practical resources for the festival in Tasiilaq. The municipality provides a stage, tables, chairs, a bouncy castle, and musical equipment.
Music consultant Ferdinand Sivertsen-Ignatiussen is providing advice on organizing the festival and will also assist with sound operations during the event. In addition, Magnus Kristiansen, head of the Leisure and Culture Department in Tasiilaq, will help out in any way he can on the day of the event.
“We are proud to support the IKUMA Music Festival. The festival fosters a sense of community, strengthens cultural life in Tasiilaq, and shows what we can achieve when we work together,” says the department head.
The municipality is also responsible for organizing the volunteers, who will help ensure the festival gets off to a good start.
The Tasiilaq Local Committee is also contributing to the festival. The Local Committee has provided facilities, including a grill, and has purchased a stage tent, which the festival is allowed to borrow.
A Good Environment for Cultural Life
With this funding, Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq hopes to help create a favorable environment for a festival that brings together residents and visitors in Tasiilaq.
The IKUMA Music Festival will take place on Friday, July 24, at the soccer field in Tasiilaq, starting at 12:00 p.m. The day’s lineup includes live concerts by Rasmus Lyberth and Small Time Giants, among others.
Ahead of the festival, the music duo Lysteriet will hold a music workshop for the town’s children on July 16–17 and July 20–22. Here, the children will have the opportunity to explore music and develop their own skills before taking the stage alongside renowned Greenlandic musicians on the day of the festival.
