On Saturday, June 27, Nuuk’s runners and local residents will gather in the square by Daddy’s for the third edition of the Memory Run—a race that’s about much more than kilometers and time.
The organizer behind the event is Niclas V. Sørensen, a fisherman and passionate advocate who started the Memory Run after losing two close friends. What began as a personal gesture of grief has now grown into one of the most heartwarming events on Nuuk’s calendar.
Everyone can join in
The race is two kilometers long—a deliberate choice. “We’ve made it shorter so that people can walk the course as well,” explains Niclas. It’s not about coming in first. It’s about showing up.
Whether you’re running, walking, or just stopping by, you’re welcome. The event starts at 12 p.m. and runs until 5 p.m.
Record turnout expected
Niclas expects this year’s race to be the biggest yet. In previous years, there have been as many as 100–150 people at the venue, but this year the running community has really turned out in force. Both Daddy’s Running Club and Runderfull Nuuk have signed up and are bringing their runners—drawn by the sense of community and free T-shirts. “I’m sure of it,” says Niclas when the conversation turns to the number of participants. The whole running community is behind it.
A Memory in Motion
Memory Run was born out of grief, but thrives on a sense of community. Niclas explains that he wants to create a space where people don’t have to put their loss into words right away. “You can go to a race and show your support for people who have experienced a loss—not just through words, but by your presence,” he says.
That presence can even be the start of a conversation. “I’m running in the Memory Run because I’ve lost something”—a remark like that, made casually after the race, can open a door that would otherwise have remained closed.
The reactions from previous years have left a deep impression on Niclas. Last year, one participant ran in memory of his mother, who had passed away shortly before. Another—a stranger—approached the organizer afterward and said that the race meant more than words could express. “It’s these small, personal interactions that affect me the most,” says Niclas.
Third year—and not the last
This year, the event has really come into its own. There will be street food, a juice bar from Happy Gut, Memory Run T-shirts for sale, a kids’ race, and live music featuring local artists.
Niclas has big plans for the future. He dreams of expanding Memory Run to other cities in Greenland—Sisimiut and Qaqortoq are mentioned—and of finding a major sponsor who can help the event gain a firmer footing.
But until then: Come join us on June 27. Bring a neighbor, a friend, or just come by yourself.
