The Youth Municipal Council of Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq held its 2026 annual meeting in Nuuk over five days, from June 1 to 5.
The young people have had a great time, making new friends and taking part in many activities. The participants have gotten to know one another and learned about children’s rights, bullying, physical activities, local politicians, and how local government services are shaped by political decisions, as well as how they can have a say and collaborate with the community.
During the joint school days, accompanying teachers from West and East Greenland formed friendship classes where the children could interact with one another.
Today, at the conclusion of the annual meeting, four recommendations were presented to the Municipal Council. The recommendations will be discussed, and decisions will be made at the next Municipal Council meeting.

Recommendations
Recommendation 1
- Partner classes are to be established in the municipality
- There should be more family days and travel subsidies
- More summer activities should be organized at residential facilities and clubs

How can we strengthen the work of the Youth Municipal Council?
MORE MEETINGS:
- Meetings outside Nuuk, for example in East Greenland and Iceland, as well as familiarization trips
- 2 times when using the internet
- 2 times at Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq
Recommendation 3
How can we prevent bullying in schools?
- If we are to combat bullying, we need support and cooperation among the children
- New information about bullying in schools should be shared regularly with teachers, students, and parents
- There should be more options for seeking help at school, such as additional staff members, social workers, and psychologists, as well as the option to seek help by phone
Recommendation 4
My recommendations:
- The Municipality of Sermersooq must uphold the same values regarding mental and physical health
- Sex education should be clearer for everyone and more effective
- Education and information should be provided about alcohol, vaping, snus, cigarettes, and other psychoactive substances
- There is a call for more attractive sports facilities for young people in cities and towns
- ITTOQQORTOORMIIT: A request for an independent clubhouse
- KULUSUK AND TASIILAQ: Better multi-purpose courts with level surfaces
