Sixteen residents from Qaanaaq, Upernavik, Uummannaq, and Ilulissat have now completed and passed a 12-week course in Ilulissat. The course was held from May 8 to 29 as a collaboration between Majoriaq and Avannaata Kommunia, with Imarsiornermik Ilinniarfik providing the instruction.
Throughout the program, participants received instruction in subjects such as marine engineering, hazardous materials, navigation, and rules of the road at sea. The course was conducted as an AMA course and also served as a pilot project supported by Avannaata Municipality.
Mayor Lars Erik Gabrielsen also thanked the participants for their dedication and hard work throughout the process and emphasized that the initiative is just the beginning.
“We want to create even more educational and training opportunities for the residents of Avannaata Municipality. This applies not only to the 12 PAX certificate of competence, but also to other fields where there is a need for skills and labor. Our goal is to strengthen the labor market, create new opportunities for residents, and contribute to positive development throughout the municipality,” says Lars Erik Gabrielsen (S), mayor of Avannaata Municipality.
The purpose of the program has been to strengthen skills in the field of maritime tourism and create more opportunities for residents of North Greenland.
The newly trained students are now better equipped to join the workforce during the busy summer season, when the need for skilled workers in the tourism and boating industries is greatest.
