A scheduled inspection conducted by the School Division of the Department of Children and Schools in Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has revealed discrepancies in the number of teaching hours at Nuussuup Atuarfia. In particular, the 6th grade stood out with a shortfall of 100 teaching hours compared to the requirements of the Public School Act. However, the school has subsequently stated that the situation has now been rectified.
The inspection was conducted on October 29, 2025, by the School Department under the Administration for Children and Schools in the Municipality of Sermersooq and is detailed in a briefing to the Committee on Children, Family, and Education. This was therefore a municipal inspection carried out by the municipal administration and not an external review.
Missed class hours
According to the inspection report, sixth-grade students received only 870 instructional hours, compared to the legally required 970 hours. Minor deviations of 10 hours below the minimum requirement were also recorded in the eighth, ninth, and tenth grades.
For the other grade levels, the number of instructional hours exceeded the minimum requirements set forth in the Public School Act.
Focus on Absenteeism and Parent Collaboration
The report also notes that the school has established procedures for student admission, tracking absences, and collaboration between the school and parents.
Student absences are monitored on an ongoing basis, and action plans are developed in collaboration with families as needed. At the same time, teacher absences are systematically recorded, and school administrators monitor these trends.
