A new Committee on Business and Natural Resources will take over responsibility for business, tourism, and collaboration with Arctic Circle Business from the Finance Committee, where the mayor serves as chair.
Responsibility for business development in Qeqqata Municipality is being transferred out of the mayor’s committee.
A majority consisting of Naleraq, Demokraatit, Atassut, and independent Gideon Lyberth has established a new standing committee on Business and Natural Resources. The committee will take over responsibility for business affairs from the Finance Committee. On September 24, the Municipal Council considered the amendment to the municipality’s bylaws for the second time. [CHECK MINUTES: adopted?]
By law, the mayor always serves as chair of the Finance Committee. The chair of the new committee, however, is elected by the committee’s own members. As a result, business, tourism, and collaboration with Arctic Circle Business—which is responsible for business and tourism development throughout the region on behalf of the municipality—will no longer be under the mayor’s direct control. Eight to seven
The proposal comes from Gideon Lyberth. The majority supporting it holds 8 of the 15 seats on the municipal council. Siumut and Inuit Ataqatigiit hold the remaining 7.
Tourism was not included in the original proposal. It was added when the majority approved the establishment of the committee at the meeting on June 25.
The new committee will have five members, bringing the total number of standing committees in the municipality to five, up from four previously: Welfare, Education, Engineering, Fisheries and Hunting, and Business and Natural Resources.
